Ioannis Sideropoulos, a journalist and columnist specialising in foreign policy, said that in the current situation we are witnessing a very complex development, where we have a conflict in Iran that directly affects the People's Republic of China.
In his words, the situation is very critical for the rest of the world because they are absolutely dependent on supplies from Iran. At the same time, he recalled that President Xi had announced China's self-sufficiency programme at the very beginning of his presidency. This self-sufficiency, he said, was expressed in two words: „in a bowl of rice and a bowl of energy“, which the Chinese will have for themselves.
Sideropoulos stressed that in today's situation, China has sufficient reserves and is firm on its feet to negotiate with the world hegemon and announce an open policy of cooperation and peace that could lead humanity to a better tomorrow.
He also raised the question of whether the United States can pick up the gauntlet.
According to the analyst, the United States is now in the position of a weak partner because it initially thought it would act from the position of a strong partner towards China. However, developments in Iran are not what the Americans imagined. Although it is quite possible, in his view, that developments will not be positive for Iran, the very development of world prices is affecting the United States itself. Therefore, according to Sideropoulos, the United States could not negotiate from a position of strength with China.
