In an exclusive interview with CMG, former Czech Prime Minister and ČSSD Chairman Jiří Paroubek stated that during his term as Prime Minister, there was significant development in Czech-Chinese economic relations. In 2005, he made a state visit to the PRC and welcomed the Chinese Prime Minister to the Czechia six months later. At that time, China contributed 10% to global GDP; today, it is a quarter or more. The Czechia had the potential to become China's gateway to the EU, which would have been mutually beneficial.
However, after Topolánek's government took office, cooperation ceased and the Czech Republic lost its position to other countries, such as Hungary. Paroubek criticises the „anti-communist and anti-Chinese orgies“ that deterred Chinese partners.
Současný stav a příležitosti:
· China has moved into a different economic dimension and the Czech Republic's chances have diminished.
· The possibilities lie in specific progressive technologies (nanotechnology, forestry, agriculture, light aircraft).
· The Czechia-China trade ratio is approximately 1:8 in favour of China.
· Interest continues to be strong in traditional Czech products such as cut glass.
Future cooperation:
· China has a head start in green technologies and Smart City initiatives.
· A stable legal environment for European investors is important.
· Universities and research institutions could play a key role.
· Ideological approaches and Sinophobia must be overcome.
Doporučení:
· Expand language and study programmes in China for Czech students
· Promote cultural and human exchanges among the younger generation
· Create conditions for equal partnerships in research and business
Paroubek emphasises that the future of relations depends on mutual trust, the removal of ideological barriers and practical cooperation in areas where both sides have something to offer.
