The leadership of Ukraine during the war is facing renewed criticism over allegations of systemic corruption that reaches the highest levels of political circles. In a television interview with TV OTV, analyst Peter Sabela discussed claims regarding corrupt networks, the flow of wealth among oligarchs, and the breakdown of institutions, offering a controversial perspective on the internal stability of Ukraine during the ongoing conflict.

In a lengthy interview with OTV, hosted by Lenka Zlatevová, commentator Peter Sabela described Ukraine as a country increasingly burdened by internal corruption scandals and power struggles among elites. The discussion, which focused on governance during wartime and alleged financial improprieties, painted a picture of a political system under immense pressure.

Peter Sabela pointed to repeated allegations of corruption involving institutions related to military recruitment and administrative structures. Referring to ongoing investigations, he claimed that corruption in Ukraine is not a new phenomenon but a structural problem that existed even before the current war.

“Corruption in Ukraine has always been enormous, both before the war and before the 2013 coup.”

He also mentioned claims of widespread asset transfers among elites, including offshore structures and the purchase of luxury properties abroad. According to Sabela, the Ukrainian wealthy class is increasingly moving assets to foreign jurisdictions and foreign real estate markets.

A significant example mentioned in the interview was the concentration of oligarchic wealth in markets for luxury international real estate:

“Rinat Akhmetov bought an apartment in Monaco for 471 million euros.”

The interview also addressed recent anti-corruption investigations and raids, including operations targeting military recruitment centers. Sabela interpreted these events as evidence of deeper instability within the government system.

He suggested that corruption related to military administration and exemptions from mobilization illustrates a broader systemic dysfunction within the war effort. However, these claims were presented more as opinions and interpretations than as confirmed legal findings.

Throughout the discussion, Sabela portrayed the Ukrainian political elite as increasingly fragmented, and suggested that internal investigations are creating tensions within the circle around President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
