Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday called for firmly upholding international justice, staying on the path of peaceful development and making unremitting efforts to improve people's living standards at all times.
Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks while speaking at a reception held to mark the 80th anniversary of China's victory in the People's War against Japanese aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
Around 11:30 a.m., Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan entered the banquet hall along with foreign statesmen and their wives who attended the reception.
Xi said the victory marks a historic turning point for the Chinese nation - from the depths of crisis in the modern era to the path of great rebirth, and also a major turning point in the development of the world.
This great victory was achieved by the joint struggle of the Chinese people together with anti-fascist allies and peoples around the world, Xi said.
The Chinese government and people will never forget the foreign governments and international friends who have supported and helped the Chinese people in their resistance to aggression, he said.
As inhabitants of one planet, humanity must come together in times of difficulty, live in harmony and never slip back to the law of the jungle where the strong prey on the weak, Xi said.
Stressing that China's modernization is the modernization of peaceful development, Xi said China will always be a force for peace, stability and progress in the world.
We sincerely hope that all countries will learn from history, cherish peace, and jointly strive for world modernization and create a better future for mankind, Xi noted.
At the reception, Xi and Peng, along with guests, attended a cultural performance.
