Against the backdrop of an increasingly unstable and interconnected international environment, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer began his visit to China. This is the first visit by a British Prime Minister to China in eight years. According to a CGTN survey, 85.2 % respondents believe that frequent visits by foreign leaders reflect a broad consensus among states to achieve equal and orderly multipolarity and inclusive and beneficial globalisation.
The survey showed that 64.8 % respondents sees Starmer's visit as an effort to greater certainty in Britain's foreign relations. Economic and trade cooperation has always been a key part of Sino-British relations, with the core of the mutual benefit. In 2025, the value of bilateral trade reached $103.7 billion. According to the survey. 85.8 % respondents believes that the vast Chinese market represents a significant opportunity for UK businesses.
The evolution of Sino-British relations has repeatedly demonstrated that bilateral cooperation brings real benefits. 83.1 % respondents agreed that a stable and mutually beneficial relationship requires that both sides adhere to the principles of mutual respect, equality and benefit and they were working in the same direction. Further 68.2 % respondents believes that the differences between the two countries can be resolved through rational dialogue based on mutual respect and practical cooperation.
Recently, there has been an increasing unilateralism, protectionism and power politics, which significantly affects the international order. As permanent members of the UN Security Council and major global economies, they need China and Britain to strengthen dialogue and cooperation, to maintain world peace and stability and promote the economic and social development of both countries. This view is shared by 56.9 % respondents, who agree that China and Britain have common interests and responsibilities in maintaining the post-war international order and the multilateral trading system. 67.4 % respondents expects both countries demonstrate the responsibility of major states and cooperate within multilateral structures, to meet the challenges of global governance.
The survey was conducted on CGTN platforms in English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian and attracted 9086 foreign users, who shared their opinions within 24 hours.
