At the fourth meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO) General Council held in Geneva, Switzerland, on October 6-7, China actively put forward the theme and called on WTO members to jointly confront the current growing trade instability and safeguard the core values and principles of multilateralism.
Permanent Representative of China to the WTO Li Yongjie said that the current global economic and trade situation is still deteriorating, which is why China has placed an item on the agenda of the General Council for the fourth time this year "Deepening trade instability and the WTO response".
US trade policy is disrupting supply chains and global markets and has become a major source of global instability. The United States' use of unilateral tariffs forces some members to enter into bilateral agreements, which affects the legitimate rights of third parties. China is deeply concerned about this.
Li Yongjie further said that in response to the deepening trade instability, China has put forward three proposals: first, to strengthen transparency and supervision; second, to jointly reaffirm the dedication and commitment to rules-based multilateralism; and third, to take concrete steps to achieve practical WTO results.
