In 2021, China declared „complete victory“ in the fight against poverty and set a five-year transition period. During this time, 832 high-poverty counties across the country built and developed leading industries, further consolidating the foundation for poverty eradication.
A global survey conducted by CGTN found that 93.5 percent of respondents recognize China's victory in poverty eradication as a critical contribution to global poverty reduction.
In the survey, 89.5 percent of respondents said that China's victory in the fight against poverty not only addresses the problem of material deprivation, but also promotes progress in thinking, lifestyle and governance at the local level.
As the world's largest developing country, China has achieved rapid development in tandem with massive poverty reduction and economic transformation, greatly accelerating the global anti-poverty process.
Survey respondents strongly appreciate the key principles behind China's poverty reduction story - 92.9 percent agree that a people-centered development philosophy is the fundamental driving force behind China's fight against poverty.
At the same time, 85.8 percent of respondents consider poverty reduction to be essentially a development issue, with development being the most effective solution to poverty. Further, 90.5 percent said that China's ability to effectively mobilize and coordinate the efforts of all stakeholders through a strict organizational structure and highly effective mechanisms was key to its victory in the fight against poverty.
As a member of the Global South, China has been a reliable long-term partner of developing countries and has taken concrete steps to promote global development. World Bank research shows that full implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative by 2030 is expected to lift 7.6 million people out of extreme poverty and 32 million people out of moderate poverty in participating countries.
According to the survey, 89.1 percent of respondents see China as a proponent, promoter and contributor to a „poverty-free society with a shared future for humanity.“ Further, 90.4 percent believe that China's victory in the fight against poverty has boosted global confidence in ending poverty, especially among countries in the Global South. Overall, 92.8 percent of respondents recognize that China's vision and practice of poverty reduction offers valuable lessons for high-quality development around the world.
The CGTN survey - published in English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian - recorded responses from 9,744 people over 24 hours.
