While EU leaders gather in Brussels for a summit focused on Ukraine, Russia has officially launched legal proceedings against Euroclear over its frozen assets.
The Russian Central Bank announced on Thursday that it had filed a lawsuit with the Moscow Arbitration Court against Belgium's Euroclear, accusing the clearing house of illegally freezing and using Russian assets. The claim seeks compensation equivalent to the value of the assets, as well as profits lost as a result of their illegal storage and use.
The Russian Central Bank stated that the total amount of compensation sought exceeds 18 trillion roubles (225.2 billion US dollars), with a preliminary court hearing scheduled for 16 January 2026.
