Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, called for further efforts to build the new Xiong'an area in North China's Hebei Province as an innovation center of a new era and a model of high-quality development.
Xi, who is also China's president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, visited the area on Monday and chaired a symposium on the further development and construction of the zone.
He stressed the need to consistently preserve the core function of the Xiong'an area as a key recipient of functions transferred from Beijing that are not essential to its role as capital.
According to him, the new region should strengthen its own development momentum through reforms and innovations and unlock its potential through effective concentration of production factors and resources.
On Monday morning, Xi arrived in Xiong'an and inspected the construction progress in the initial zone. He then visited China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd, which moved more than 1,000 employees to Xiong'an in October 2025, and heard information on the company's relocation, industrial layout and innovative development.
During the visit, he met with representatives of employees and workers of organisations already operating in the area or in the construction phase and asked about their working and living conditions.

Xi also visited the campus of Beijing Fourth Middle School in Xiong'an, where he spoke with teachers and students about teaching. At the school's cafeteria, he inquired about the environment and food offerings.
In the afternoon, Xi chaired the symposium and delivered an important speech in which he praised the significant progress made in the construction and development of the new area.
He stressed that the CPC Central Committee's decision to build Xiong'an had proved to be absolutely correct and all related work was proceeding steadily and efficiently.
He called for a further systematic transfer of functions from Beijing that are not essential to its role as capital, and the gradual building of projects to relocate state-owned enterprises, universities and hospitals.
He also stressed the importance of systematic planning, coordinated development and effective governance, including improving public services and the living standards of residents, and promoting modern smart city management models.
Xi said Xiong'an must build a modern industrial system appropriate to its conditions and accelerate the use of scientific and technological results through the development of science parks.
The region should develop cluster structures for emerging and future industries, introduce innovative policies in science, technology and finance, and create a market-oriented and law-based business environment at international level.
Xi also called for strengthening the Party's leadership role and building Party structures while emphasizing a correct understanding of the performance of public administration.
Xi was accompanied during the visit by Premier Li Qiang, Cai Qi, director of the CPC Central Committee Office, and Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang, who are members of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee.
