China's northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region achieved record cotton production exceeding six million tonnes in 2025, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Friday.
A total of 6.165 million tonnes of cotton were produced this year, representing 92.8 per cent of national production.
The cotton planting area in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has expanded to nearly 38.88 million mu (approximately 2.59 million hectares), representing a year-on-year increase of 5.9 per cent, and the average yield reached 158.6 kilograms per mu, up 2.4 per cent year-on-year.
Favourable weather throughout the growing season helped to boost production, while stronger political support, advances in agricultural technology and better development of skilled talent also contributed to higher productivity.
The overall mechanisation rate of cotton cultivation and harvesting in Xinjiang is expected to exceed 97.5 per cent this year, further promoting large-scale, mechanised and intelligent cotton production.
Xinjiang remains China's largest cotton-producing region. China's total cotton production increased by 7.7 per cent year-on-year, reaching 6.641 million tonnes in 2025.
