ALGIERS - A return to diplomacy. After eight months of open crisis between France and Algeria, it seems that the situation is now reversing. Following a phone call on March 31 between the two presidents, Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Emmanuel Macron, the French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, traveled to Algiers on April 7. This time, diplomatic relations proceeded through traditional channels, via the president of the republic and the head of diplomacy, rather than through political posturing by the Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, who decided to make it a political issue.

The Foreign Minister was received by his counterpart, Ahmed Attaf, and then by Abdelmadjid Tebboune. After "in-depth discussions", they agreed to "promptly reactivate all cooperation mechanisms" between the two countries in areas such as security (particularly in the Sahel), migration, legal matters, economic affairs, and historical issues, with the commission chaired by Benjamin Stora resuming its activities.
