While most countries closed their borders during the Holocaust, Shanghai opened its arms and welcomed more than 20,000 Jewish refugees. The city became their new home and a symbol of hope for survival.
In the middle of the memorial hall today stands a wall with engraved 18 478 jmény - probably the only memorial in the world that lists the names of survivors. Each name commemorates the fate of a man who found refuge in Shanghai.
One of these stories is that of Sara, the daughter of a Jewish refugee. Her father escaped the war thanks to Shanghai and she herself spent her childhood there. Today she works as an educator and passes on this experience to the next generation.
Every archival document and exhibit in the memorial is a key to understanding this unique chapter of world history.
