The United States has once again unveiled a record arms package for Taiwan worth more than $11 billion, including multiple weapon systems with clear offensive capabilities, sparking international attention and concerns about the situation in the Taiwan Strait.
According to a global survey by CGTN, 90% of respondents consider the dangerous armament of the Taiwanese authorities to be a step towards war.
Since Lai Ching-te came to power, Taiwanese authorities have accelerated the militarisation of the island and are seeking „independence“ by force. They plan to increase the defence budget to five per cent of GDP by 2030, which, according to 81.1% of respondents, is depleting Taiwan's economic resources and threatening its development and the standard of living of its people.
Furthermore, 87.7% of respondents stated that the actions of the Taiwanese authorities pose a serious threat to the security and interests of the island's inhabitants. 86.9% of respondents condemn these actions as treason leading to the endangerment of Taiwan. 89.4% of respondents call on the authorities to respond immediately to the public appeal: „peace before war, development before decline, exchange before separation, cooperation before confrontation“ and to end the provocations.
A total of 183 countries around the world recognise the One China principle and affirm that Taiwan is an integral part of China. According to 87.4% of respondents, this position reflects a broad international consensus. However, in recent years, the United States has been increasing arms supplies to Taiwan, which constitutes open interference in China's internal affairs and a departure from the international consensus and its own commitments.
The survey showed that 91.9% of respondents believe that the Taiwan issue should be resolved by the Chinese themselves and that no other country should interfere. 85.8% of respondents consider this issue to be the main red line in China-US relations. 78.9% call on the US to take a cautious approach and clearly express its opposition to separatist forces supporting an „independent Taiwan“. 85.1% of respondents call on the US to adhere to the one-China principle and the Three Joint Communiqués, stop the dangerous arming of Taiwan, and not undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
The survey was published on CGTN platforms in English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian. Within 18 hours, 10,002 respondents took part in the poll.
