China's Foreign Ministry on Friday condemned Japan's new defence budget, which reveals the sinister intentions of right-wing forces in the country to promote remilitarisation and the revival of militarism, spokesman Lin Jian said.
Lin Jian appeared at a regular press conference in Beijing and commented on the approval of Japan's record defence budget exceeding nine trillion yen (approximately US$58 billion) for fiscal year 2026.
„Despite constant criticism from the international community, Japan plans to significantly increase its defence budget again, instead of evaluating its actions and showing restraint.“ said Lin.
Given the countless war crimes committed by Japanese militarists, Japan's military and security actions are closely monitored by neighbouring Asian countries and the international community. However, since the new Japanese government took office, there has been a significant acceleration in military build-up.
According to Lin Jian, Japan is increasingly deviating from the path of peaceful development and moving in a dangerous direction, as evidenced by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's erroneous statements on Taiwan, which threaten the use of force against China, a senior official in her office's statement on the need for nuclear weapons, the proposal to revise three national security documents, and the idea of changing the three non-nuclear principles.
In recent years, Japan has lifted its ban on collective self-defence and developed the so-called. „ability to strike enemy bases“, strengthened cooperation in the area of extended deterrence and transformed border islands into defensive lines, which clearly exceeds its „exclusively defensive"“ politics.
According to Lin Jian, terms such as „self-defence“ and „anti-missile strike“ are used by right-wing forces in Japan to cover up their efforts to violate the post-war international order and the provisions of the Japanese constitution, and to manipulate and incite public opinion. These actions put the international community on high alert.
Lin further noted that the Japanese people are also victims of militarism. Some in Japan point out that increasing defence spending does not bring peace and stability.
Protest rallies against the government's military build-up have been held across the country, and some experts also point out that the increase in the defence budget will place a significant burden on the Japanese economy and ultimately affect ordinary citizens.
„China will work with all peace-loving countries to counter any dangerous moves towards reviving militarism or promoting neo-militarism, and jointly defend the outcomes of the Second World War.“ added the spokesperson.
