China's Foreign Ministry said on January 8 that the United States' decision to withdraw from 66 international organizations - comprising 31 UN entities and 35 non-UN organizations - is nothing new. According to Chinese spokesperson Mao Ning, multilateral institutions exist for the general benefit of all countries, not to advance the interests of one particular country.
Mao Ning stressed that the value of international organisations and mechanisms lies in defending common interests, not in promoting national priorities. The UN-based system, she said, has helped maintain global peace and stability, promote economic and social development and ensure equal rights among states for more than 80 years.
The current global situation, according to Mao Ning, shows once again that only the effective functioning of multilateral systems can prevent the spread of the „law of the jungle“ and prevent the international order from being dominated by the principle of power and the use of force, which is particularly important for small and developing countries.
China will continue to promote multilateralism, support the central role of the UN in international affairs, and work with the global community to create a fairer and more equitable system of global governance.
