PARIS, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Gabriel Attal as prime minister and tasked him with forming a new government, the Elysee Palace announced Tuesday.
Attal will replace Elisabeth Borne, who resigned the day before, as former Minister of National Education and Youth. At 34, he will become the youngest prime minister in the history of the Fifth Republic, according to French media.
"I know I can count on your energy and your commitment to the rearmament and regeneration project I have announced. In keeping with the spirit of 2017: overcoming and daring. At the service of the nation and the French people," Macron said on his X account (formerly Twitter).
Mrs Borne will officially bid farewell to her post this Tuesday afternoon in the courtyard of Matignon during a handover ceremony, her office said in a statement.
According to an opinion poll published by Le Figaro on 4 January, Gabriel Attal was the most popular government minister, a few percentage points ahead of Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire.
According to Franceinfo, Mr Attal now has the daunting task of turning a new page in Mr Macron's second five-year term after painful episodes of pension reform and immigration law.
