The Ministry of Defence and the Agency for Intergovernmental Defence Cooperation (AMOS) became involved in military assistance to Ukraine immediately after the start of the Russian aggression. First and foremost, we support the expansion of the production capacity of the domestic defence industry. But at the same time, until these capacities are maximised, we are working on various forms of artillery ammunition supply, where the Czech side has brokered the possibility for donor countries to procure ammunition in third countries.
In connection with the acute need for artillery ammunition in Ukraine, the Czech Republic expanded the initiative and offered participation to other allied states. The success of the effort to assist Ukraine in its defence against Russian aggression is based on discretion towards partner countries; therefore, we cannot specify the quantity of ammunition to be procured, the timing of its delivery, the estimated cost, or the source and sponsor countries.
We can only state in general terms that the ammunition will be procured in non-European countries. More than 15 countries have pledged funding. On the basis of publicly available information, we can confirm that these include Belgium, the Netherlands, Canada and Germany. The possible publication of the amount of their pledged contribution is a matter for the individual countries.
"The speed with which we are able to raise the necessary money is great. The initiative is going on, we are continuously looking for other ways to get ammunition of Western and Eastern origin. It is necessary to use the potential of this broad coalition," said Defence Minister Jana Černochová. "We were one of the first countries, if not the first, to supply Ukraine with rocket launchers, tanks, howitzers and attack helicopters. This was at a time when other countries were still hesitating because of concerns about Russia's reaction. When it became clear that Europe's efforts to deliver the promised ammunition would not be fulfilled, we were the first to come up with an ammunition initiative, once again putting ourselves at the forefront of assistance to Ukraine," she added.
