At the G20 summit in Johannesburg, Chinese Premier Li Qiang called on participants to strengthen international cooperation and jointly address global challenges, from climate change and the energy crisis to food security and technological transformation.
Li emphasised that current challenges such as climate change and the energy and food crises require unity and cooperation among the international community in finding solutions. He called on all countries to strengthen environmental protection, adhere to a science-based approach and the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities in addressing environmental and climate issues. China is ready to accelerate the implementation of the COP30 outcomes and cooperate on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
The Prime Minister also called for enhanced cooperation in green energy and just industrial transformation. He supported the stable and unrestricted flow of technology and products and offered China's assistance in the energy transition for individual countries. To ensure food security, Li emphasised the need to optimise global food circulation, develop an open and stable market, and strengthen agricultural science and technology.
Li pointed out that the current scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation offer new opportunities, but at the same time can increase inequalities. The G20 should promote openness, win-win cooperation and the sharing of opportunities, thereby improving the living standards of people around the world.
The Prime Minister also focused on artificial intelligence (AI), support for cooperation in research and sharing of results, improvement of governance rules, and the safe and fair use of AI. He also emphasised the need for mutually beneficial cooperation in the field of strategic raw materials and a cautious approach to their military applications.
Li called for strengthening development support for the Global South, including capacity building, job creation, and the development of women and youth. China is ready to work with other parties to achieve the G20 Nelson Mandela Bay Target so that more young people can benefit from globalisation.
The summit adopted the G20 South Africa Summit: Leaders’ Declaration, and during the meeting, Li held friendly talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, Angolan President Joao Lourenco, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and others.
