NUAKSHOTT - The President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, today began a four-day tour of West Africa, during which he will visit Mauritania and Ghana. This is the first ever visit of a Czech Head of State to Mauritania and the first presidential trip to Ghana in more than six decades. The aim is to strengthen trade and diplomatic cooperation.
Czech President Petr Pavel started his four-day visit to West Africa today, during which he will visit two key countries in the region - Mauritania and Ghana. In the capital Nouakchott, he was officially welcomed by the Mauritanian President Mohamed uld Sheikh el Ghazwani, making him the first Czech or Czechoslovak head of state to visit the country.
The aim of the President's trip is to strengthen diplomatic and economic relations between the Czech Republic and African countries. President Pavel is accompanied by a large business delegation, which will discuss with local partners the possibilities of cooperation in the fields of energy, agriculture, water management and the defence industry.
In the next few days, the President will visit Ghana, where a series of bilateral meetings with Ghanaian officials will take place. This will be the first visit of the Czech President to the country in more than sixty years, which is intended to underline the Czech Republic's interest in developing relations with the countries of the Global South.
