PRAGUE - 18 February 2025 | Markéta Pekarová Adamová, the Chair of TOP 09 and the Chair of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, will not be defending her seat. She decided to do so in connection with her health problems. She will remain in her position as Chair of TOP 09 and Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies.
"I perceive and have always perceived politics as a service to the citizens of our country. However, my health does not allow me to add election campaigning to my current workload. I have considered my decision carefully and have also consulted with my doctors before making it." Says Markéta Pekarová Adamová, who announced her intention not to run again to the TOP 09 Board at a meeting on Tuesday 18 February 2025. At the same time, she made the position of party chair available.
"Markéta has done an incredible amount for TOP 09 and I deeply appreciate her work. She is equally conscientious in her work as Speaker of the House. I am extremely sorry that she cannot continue her campaign. All the more so because of health reasons. As a friend and as a doctor, I fully respect her responsible decision and I am glad that Margaret is heeding the advice of experts and taking her health into account. As 1st Vice-Chairman, I will of course continue to fully support her," says Vlastimil Válek, 1st Vice-Chairman of TOP 09.
The members of the Board unanimously supported Markéta Pekarova Adamová as Chair and expressed their wish that she would lead the party to the ordinary congress in November 2025.
"Of course, I understand Markéta's decision in human terms and I fully respect it. Markéta is doing a great job as Chair and I clearly welcome her decision to stay on as Chair at our suggestion. I know that she will do everything her health will allow her to support TOP 09 before the parliamentary elections." says the Deputy Chairman of TOP 09 Michal Kučera.
"I appreciate the reaction of my colleagues in TOP 09 and I want to thank them first of all for their heartfelt support. In the coming months, I will focus on continuing to fulfil my duties as Speaker of the lower house of Parliament," said Markéta Pekarová Adamová.
Chairman of the Prague Regional Organization TOP 09 Jiří Pospíšil He said: "Most of all, I would like to express my support for our Chairwoman Markéta Pekarová Adamová and thank her for the openness with which she spoke to us today. I wish her health to improve as quickly as possible. I will do everything I can to ensure that we succeed in the next parliamentary elections, which will decide the future of our country, and not just for the next four years."
