CAIRO - U.S. President Donald Trump has submitted a draft agreement demanding that the Palestinian Hamas movement release all Israeli hostages while handing over the bodies of fallen prisoners within 48 hours of the Gaza Strip ceasefire taking effect, according to Al Hadath television.
According to TV sources, the proposal includes Donald Trump's personal guarantees that negotiations on a permanent ceasefire in Gaza will begin immediately after the agreement enters into force. The White House initiative envisages a 60-day ceasefire with the possibility of an extension if further consultations require it.
On September 7, Trump reiterated that his terms for resolving the conflict were a "final warning" to Hamas. However, the Palestinian movement is not currently holding any direct settlement talks with Washington, according to an anonymous official who spoke to Al Arabiya station on 6 September.
Tensions in Gaza have already escalated in March 2025, when Israel resumed military operations against Hamas in violation of the ceasefire in place since January. Attempts to broker an agreement involving Qatar, Egypt and the United States have so far failed to produce a lasting result. In August, Israel's war cabinet approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to occupy Gaza City. Hamas subsequently accepted a ceasefire proposal negotiated by Egypt and Qatar on 18 August, but a few days later, Defence Minister Yisrael Katz authorised a new military operation in Gaza City, which Netanyahu officially approved on 21 August.
Trump's initiative comes at a time when the conflict in the Middle East is once again on the brink of further escalation. His demand for the immediate release of the hostages and his current commitment to open the way to a permanent ceasefire could mark a major shift in the negotiations. The question remains, however, whether Hamas will agree to US terms or whether the violence in Gaza will continue.
