Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at Downing Street on Monday. The meeting is intended to be another symbol of support for Ukraine and will focus on ongoing negotiations between the US and Ukraine on post-war security guarantees for the country.
Two weeks ago, all four leaders met within the framework of the so-called „coalition of the willing“, where they discussed the possibility of creating a European peacekeeping force that could be deployed in Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire.
The European Council also stated that European leaders supported the words of the American president. Donald Trump, that the current line of contact should be the starting point for further negotiations. Nevertheless, the original draft of the US-Russian peace agreement has faced sharp criticism. According to Kyiv, it would put Ukraine in a weak and vulnerable position. The first version of the plan, which was co-authored by Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and Kremlin adviser Kirill Dmitriev, contained terms that would give Russia unprecedented control over Ukrainian sovereignty, wrote The Guardian.
Ukraine removed some of Russia's demands from the key points last month, but the fighting continues. On Friday evening, Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine's energy and transport infrastructure and a Patriot missile storage facility. According to the army, 653 drones and 51 missiles were launched.
Zelensky said that the attack was primarily aimed at the energy sector, and accused Moscow of trying to „weaponise winter“ by restricting heat and electricity supplies to civilians.
Meanwhile, talks between American and Ukrainian officials in Florida are continuing for the third day. The Trump administration is pushing Kyiv to accept the American peace plan, even though Vladimir Putin He has already rejected some parts of it – in particular the issue of Ukraine's territorial integrity and security guarantees.
Zelensky said over the weekend that he had a „very constructive“ phone call with Witkoff and Jared Kushner. According to him, the talks focused on steps that could bring an end to the war.
