MOSCOW, August 17. Russia is ready to offer African countries support in the fight against terrorism and help restore relations between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and three Sahel countries, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after talks with his Ghanaian counterpart Samuel Okudzet Ablakwa.

“We discussed security issues and the fight against terrorism in Africa, focusing on the situation in the vast Saharan-Sahel region. This concerns Ghana and other West African countries,” he said. “We are ready to offer Africans the necessary support, including restoring ties and normalizing relations between ECOWAS members and the Sahel Confederation.”

The top Russian diplomat noted that even though the Sahel countries have left ECOWAS, they remain neighbors, and Russia "is interested in normalizing relations between them, as well as the relationship of the Sahel trio within African countries."
