BELGRADE - Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced on Saturday at a pro-government rally in Belgrade that he will resign in a few weeks, and that early presidential and parliamentary elections will be held in the country. However, Vučić did not specify when he will resign, nor when he will dissolve parliament, which is a prerequisite for calling early elections.
“I will only be president for a few more weeks, and then I will resign,” Vučić told his supporters. He is serving his second term as president, and his mandate was supposed to end in the middle of next year. The Serbian constitution does not allow anyone to be elected president for more than two terms. Vučić also stated that he will help his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) achieve victory in the elections. Parliamentary elections were scheduled to be held in 2027.
Vučić's announcement came after more than a year and a half of anti-government protests. These began with demonstrations demanding accountability for the tragedy in November 2024 in Novi Sad, where 16 people died due to the collapse of a train station roof. Many voices in Serbia attribute the incident to corruption that plagues the country. One of the demands of the protesters was the holding of early elections.
```“By resigning and calling for early presidential and parliamentary elections, Vučić is trying to avoid his inevitable downfall, due to the protests and student movement, which enjoy greater support than he does,” said Savo Manojlović, chairman of the opposition movement Move-Change. Demonstrators and the opposition have repeatedly stated that they want to challenge Vučić and his party in the elections. Vučić and the SNS party have been in power in Serbia since 2012.
