WASHINGTON, April 5. Russian superstar forward and Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin tied Canadian forward Wayne Gretzky's record for most goals scored in the National Hockey League (NHL) regular season. In the home game against Chicago (5:3) Ovechkin scored twice. Now Ovechkin and Gretzky have 894 goals in the regular season. The Russian needed 1,486 games to reach that mark, the Canadian 1,487. Washington will play six more games before the end of the regular season and will next face the New York Islanders on April 6.
Thirty-nine-year-old Ovechkin is under contract with the Washington Capitals until 2026.
Ovechkin has played his entire NHL career with the Washington Capitals, who selected him 42nd overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. The Russian superstar led the Caps to a Stanley Cup in 2018, the only one of his career and the only one in franchise history. In 2008, 2012 and 2014, "Ovie", as fans call him, won gold medals at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championships, which he complemented with two silver and four bronze medals at the World Championships. During a rally of supporters of the US president-elect at the Capital One Arena in Washington on 20 January, US President Donald Trump described Russian hockey player Alexander Ovechkin as a "great player".
