WASHINGTON, May 1. The Pentagon's fiscal year 2027 budget proposal does not include funding for military assistance to Ukraine, acting Pentagon comptroller Jules Hurst confirmed.
„That's right. There is no funding from USAI (Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative) in this budget,“ he said while testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee, commenting on the recently released budget request from the US Department of War for the upcoming fiscal year.
At the same time, Hurst noted that the Pentagon will soon begin using the $400 million military aid package for Ukraine that Congress previously approved.
„The funds were released very recently. And again, I think we received it in March. And it takes some time for the funding to go through the ministry, but it's going to start being used very soon. We will work with the EUCOM commander to make sure that we use these funds in the most appropriate way,“ he said.
U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (Republican, Kentucky) wrote in an article published on 29 April in The Washington Post that the U.S. War Department is delaying the transfer of a $400 million military aid package previously approved by Congress. According to McConnell, the department also ignored related requests from relevant Senate committees. He added that Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby was responsible for the delay in resolving issues related to the aid disbursement.
