LIVIGNO – The Czech team is celebrating its first gold medal at the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. Snowboarder Zuzana Maděrová triumphed in the parallel giant slalom, achieving the first ever Olympic victory for the Czech Republic at these Games. She confidently navigated the technically challenging course in Livigno, defeating Austrian representative Sabine Payer in the final.
Maděrová entered the competition with great confidence, demonstrating her speed in the qualifying rounds. In the subsequent knockout rounds, she gradually overcame opponents from Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, confirming her status as one of the favorites. In the final, she delivered a precise and dynamic performance, building a decisive lead in the upper section of the course.
“It was my dream, and I still can't believe it. The conditions weren't easy, but I felt great and tried to give it my all,” Maděrová said after the race. She described winning the gold medal as a reward for years of hard work and the support of the team.
The success of the Czech snowboarder also holds significant symbolic meaning for the entire team. After the initial days of the Games, which did not bring any medals for the Czech Republic, this victory provided a much-needed boost. The women's parallel giant slalom has cemented Zuzana Maděrová's place as one of the most prominent figures in the Winter Olympics so far, and has opened the door for the Czech team to pursue further ambitions in the upcoming competitions.
