Wang Yi, a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Director of the Office for Foreign Affairs of the Central Committee of the CPC, met in New Delhi on Wednesday with Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, National Security Advisor of the United Arab Emirates. The main topics of discussion were bilateral relations between China and the UAE, as well as the current situation in the Middle East.
Wang Yi emphasized that China and the United Arab Emirates are comprehensive strategic partners, and that their relations have been steadily developing in recent years, despite the changing international situation. He noted that this is largely due to the strategic leadership of President Xi Jinping and President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
According to Wang Yi, the Chinese side is ready to further strengthen mutual trust, promote high-level contacts, expand areas of cooperation, and deepen relations between the people of the two countries. The goal is to elevate the China-UAE partnership to an even higher level.
A significant portion of the talks was also devoted to developments in the Middle East. Wang Yi recalled that since the outbreak of the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran, China and the UAE have maintained close communication. He stressed that the war should not have happened in the first place, and that it is essential to end it as quickly as possible.
According to the Chinese diplomat, there are now signs pointing towards dialogue, but true peace will depend on the joint efforts of all parties involved. He identified three priorities. The first is adherence to a lasting and comprehensive ceasefire and the implementation of a recently signed memorandum of understanding. The second is the earliest possible resumption of normal traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, which he described as a vital artery for regional development and global trade. The third priority is the restoration of trust between the countries of the region and consideration of creating a new security architecture that is appropriate for current conditions.
Wang Yi also emphasized that the Middle East should not be a theater for great power competition or a victim of geopolitical interests. According to him, China is ready to continue to support the United Arab Emirates in its constructive role in promoting long-term peace, stability, and development in the region.
