BEIJING - Chinese President Xi Jinping called for maximum effort in rescue operations, assistance to residents affected by floods, treatment of the injured, and ensuring safe accommodation for those evacuated, following widespread flooding that has hit several regions of the country.
Xi Jinping, who is also the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, emphasized that it is essential to make every effort to minimize loss of life and prevent further disasters.
The President issued these instructions after heavy rains and strong winds caused a series of emergencies, including the breach of a dam and landslides in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Hubei Province, and Gansu Province. These disasters have resulted in a high number of casualties and significant economic damage.
In light of the serious flood situation, Xi Jinping urged local authorities and relevant state institutions to strictly implement flood control measures. He stressed the need to conduct extensive inspections of rivers, lakes, aging reservoirs, and areas at risk of geological hazards in order to identify and eliminate potential threats in a timely manner.
At the same time, he called for strengthening monitoring of the situation, early warning systems, and the readiness of rescue teams. He stated that it is essential to continue with consistent prevention and mitigation of the consequences of natural disasters in order to best protect the lives, health, and property of residents.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China, called for further tightening of measures. He emphasized the need to continuously monitor the development of precipitation and the flood situation in individual regions, to strengthen risk assessment and early warning systems, and to continue rescue and humanitarian efforts with maximum effort.
