Agates are among the most popular gemstones for Czech collectors, primarily due to their diversity and color variations. They are found in cavities within amygdaloidal rocks (mainly basalt), where they grow from the walls inwards in various colors within layers of chalcedony, quartz, and opal. Sometimes, crystals of quartz or amethyst can also be found inside. Silica fills these cavities after volcanic gases escape from the cooling lava, gradually forming the characteristic agate bands that are only visible when the stone is cut. Agates are less commonly found in basalts, porphyries, and other volcanic rocks.
Agates are known in a wide range of colors, influenced by the presence of iron, manganese, nickel, chromium, and various minerals such as hematite, goethite, and chlorite. They are translucent to opaque, glassy, matte, and rarely have a silky luster.
The name "agate" comes from the original name of the Achates River, now Drillo, in Sicily.
Archaeological findings show that agates were worked as early as the Paleolithic era, initially as tools, and later for decorative and ceremonial objects. They were also popular in ancient Greece and Rome, where they were used to create seals, cameos, as well as bowls and cups. As a talisman, they were believed to protect against poisons, misfortune at sea, and natural disasters. They were also thought to promote longevity, success, and good friends.
In the Czech Republic, the most well-known localities are in the Krkonoše Mountains, near Kozákov, in the area around Železnice, in Turnov, Frýdštejn, and near Stará Paka, as well as near Horní Halže in the Krušné Mountains. Numerous localities exist worldwide, including Poland, Germany, Russia, Mongolia, China, India, and Australia. In Africa, they are known from Botswana, Egypt, and Madagascar.
