Controversial statements by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan have sparked sharp international criticism. Opponents from Russia, Thailand and Venezuela warn that her comments threaten regional and global peace and could serve as a pretext for Japanese military expansion.

During a parliamentary hearing on 7 November, Takaichi reportedly mentioned „life-threatening situation“ in connection with Japan's controversial security legislation and linked it to the Taiwan issue, suggesting that Tokyo could consider this issue a reason for military intervention in the future.

Spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova stressed that the current Japanese leader should learn from history and avoid making dangerous statements about Taiwan. „Peace is a fragile thing; peace is the work of man.“ She stated and added that political activities in the Asia-Pacific region should be conducted responsibly and peacefully, not aggressively.

Former Thai Deputy Prime Minister Phinij Jarusombat described Takaichi's remarks as a serious threat to regional peace and called on her to retract them. „All countries should work together to maintain a peaceful and stable international order and build a community with a shared future for mankind.“ dodal.

Podle Rodolfa Sanze from Venezuela Takaichi's remarks violate the one-China principle, as Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory. President of the Vancouver Peace Council Kimbal Cariou warned that her statements distort history, threaten international law and destabilise the region. „Its real intention is to pave the way for Japan's future military expansion, which is very dangerous and alarming.“ dodal.
