Brazil, China, France, Jordan, Kazakhstan, South Africa and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) issued a joint statement announcing the co-hosting of a high-level global conference on respect for humanity in war in 2026.
The declaration called on all countries to consider the implementation of international humanitarian law (IHL) at the national level, formally allocate sufficient resources and ensure compliance with IHL in preparation for the conference; support the integration of IHL into national legislation and conflict preparedness through adequate training of military and security forces and strengthening of national IHL committees; and formally join the Global Initiative for Political Commitment on IHL, actively participate in consultations and encourage other countries to join.
