"THE EU PROJECT NEEDS A NEW LEASE OF LIFE, THAT'S WHY I OFFER A VISION FOR EUROPE."
PRAGUE, 9 May 2024 - Pirate MEP Markéta Gregorová christened a unique book entitled Vision for Europe on Europe Day. A number of experts from academia and practitioners contributed to the publication. The authors' collective outlines a vision for Europe in the 21st century. Topics such as the depth of integration, Eurofederalism or the crisis of shared values are not missing. The collection comes at a time when the Czech Republic is marking the 20th anniversary of its accession to the EU.
"I dreamt up a vision for Europe five years ago when I read a seemingly ordinary article about how a pro-European part of society lacked a plan, a vision of a united Europe. Where the Eurosceptics offer Czexit, the Euro-optimists have only vague theses about EU reform. I decided to fix that,", says MEP Gregorová, the motivation for writing the proceedings.
"Just as Europe is a diverse continent of cultures and shared histories, our publication is similarly diverse in terms of subject matter. The overarching starting point for all of them is federalism as a possibility for European cooperation, but each of the authors adds his or her own unique perspective and expertise. The volume is structured in a sequential manner, from the historical aspirations for a united Europe and when unification actually took place, through the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of federal set-ups, the state of the current European Union and the certain inevitability of 'Europe', to the nature of Europeanism," explains Gregorová.
"I wished that the compendium would not sound like there is one 'truth' that everyone should start thinking about now, but that it would lead people to think and create their own vision for Europe. However, despite the different positions and interpretations of the authorship, they are all heading towards a similar conclusion and share one concern across their visions: to have a united Europe. And this is the only common feature that I, as the initiator of the project, wanted to preserve," the Pirate adds.
The proceedings are physically available on request via the MEP's e-mail marketa.gregorova@pirati.cz, and since Thursday evening they are also available for download online at https://vizeproevropu.eu.
