Chinese Vice President Han Zheng attended the plenary session of the 29th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on Friday and delivered a speech on implementing the Initiative for Global Governance and working together for a better future.

In his speech, Han noted that the world is experiencing profound changes unseen in the past century, and that global challenges and shortcomings in global governance are becoming increasingly prominent. He added that the Initiative for Global Governance, proposed by China, has received positive feedback and support from nearly 160 countries and international organizations.

According to Han, a Group of Friends of Global Governance has been established within the United Nations, sending a unified signal in support of the goals and principles of the UN Charter, true multilateralism, and opposition to unilateralism.

Han Zheng emphasized that China, as the initiator of the Initiative for Global Governance, is fulfilling its commitments through concrete actions, bringing together all parties, and jointly promoting the reform and improvement of the global governance system.

As major countries and permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and Russia bear an important responsibility in transforming the global governance system, Han said. He added that China is ready to work with Russia and all other parties to promote the Initiative for Global Governance and to build an open, inclusive, equitable, and just world based on mutually beneficial cooperation.

Han put forward four proposals for the further development of the Initiative for Global Governance.

First, he said, it is necessary to adhere to equal cooperation and promote a vision of global governance based on extensive consultations, shared benefits, and win-win cooperation. It is essential to practice true multilateralism, ensure equal participation, decision-making, and sharing of benefits for all countries in global governance, firmly support the democratization of international relations, and strengthen the representation and voice of developing countries.

Second, it is necessary to uphold international justice and fairness and protect the status and authority of the United Nations. All countries should uphold international equality based on universally recognized international laws and rules, reject double standards and selective application of law, and support the United Nations in restoring its authority and vitality in new circumstances, so that it can serve as the main platform for coordinating the actions of states and jointly addressing common challenges.

Third, it is necessary to strengthen common development so that people around the world can gain greater benefits. In order to improve the well-being of all, countries should fully implement the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and promote common development and prosperity in the world.

Fourth, it is necessary to strengthen coordinated actions and achieve more concrete results. Countries, international organizations, and multilateral institutions should align development strategies and plan to coordinate policies, so as to create synergies in addressing global challenges and promoting common development.

Han Zheng noted that this year is the first year of China's 15th Five-Year Plan. This plan, he said, represents an inspiring development plan for China over the next five years and reflects China's commitment to mutually beneficial cooperation with all countries in the world.

China is ready to work with all parties to fully implement the Initiative for Global Governance, build a fairer and more equitable global governance system, and jointly create a brighter future for humanity, Han said.

On the sidelines of the forum, Han Zheng also had a brief meeting with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
