The Riding Hall at Lednice Castle – A Multifunctional Center at Lednice Castle.
The multi-functional center at Lednice Castle, originally built as stables, is located north of the village of Lednice, on a slightly elevated slope overlooking the castle grounds and the Dyje River.
The building consists of three wings and mutually opposed projections in the form of risalites, which enclose the stable courtyard from the north. The stables are among the oldest and best-preserved parts of the Lednice Castle complex, having undergone relatively minor structural changes throughout their history. Some modifications were made to the spaces in the western wing, which now house apartments, and to the spaces on the second floor of the eastern wing, which were formerly used by the Agricultural University. During the restoration of the stables, treasures of European significance were discovered, including some of the largest Baroque riding hall floors, while the facade is adorned with original Baroque illusionistic paintings.
History of the Stables:
During the Baroque period, horses were a symbol of prestige, wealth, and power. Consequently, stables were an essential part of the residential complexes of ruling families. This was also the case at Lednice, the summer residence of the Liechtenstein princely family, where the architectural vision of Prince Karl Eusebius of Liechtenstein was translated into a project that began in 1687 and 1688 under the direction of Johann Bernard Fischer of Erlach.
In 1690-1691, Prince Johann Adam of Liechtenstein commissioned the Italian architect Domenico Martinelli to complete the stables in accordance with the tastes of the time. The construction of a fourth wing, which would have closed the stable courtyard from the north, was never completed. It was only at the end of the 18th century that the space was enclosed by two partial wings that extended from the western and eastern wings of the building.
