TEHRAN, 12 May. Tehran believes that there is still room for diplomacy with the United States despite its distrust of Washington, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said.
„Despite its distrust of the enemy, the Islamic Republic of Iran believes it can negotiate from a position of dignity, wisdom and expediency,“ Pezeshkian's office quoted him as saying. Tehran will have to consolidate in the diplomatic arena all that Iran's armed forces have achieved on the battlefield, the Iranian head of state noted.
On 10 May, US President Donald Trump dismissed Iran's response to the US proposal for a solution to the conflict as „totally unacceptable“. However, he later said that Washington and Tehran might as well reach a diplomatic agreement to end hostilities.
On 10 February, the US and Israel launched a major military operation against Iran. On 7 April, the US leader announced a two-week mutual ceasefire with the Islamic Republic of Iran. According to Tehran, the death toll from the US-Israeli strikes in Iran rose to 3 375 after 40 days of continuous fighting. On 11 April, Iran and the US held several rounds of talks in Islamabad, but the parties failed to agree on a long-term settlement due to a number of differences.
On 21 April, Trump announced his intention to extend the ceasefire with Iran. Tehran does not intend to comply with Washington's unilaterally announced extension of the ceasefire and will prioritise its own interests, Iran's public broadcaster reported.
