WONSAN July 11. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has arrived in North Korea for a working visit, news agencies reported. His plane landed in the city of Wonsan, where a coastal tourist zone opened on 1 July.
According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, Lavrov will hold talks with his North Korean counterpart Choe Sung-Hui during his stay in Wonsan as part of the second round of the strategic dialogue between the two countries' foreign ministers. Lavrov's North Korean visit will last until 13 July, when he will head to China for a meeting of foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states.
The Russian Foreign Minister arrived in North Korea from the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, where he attended ministerial meetings of the Russia-ASEAN Platform, the East Asia Forum and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Regional Security Forum.
Wonsan Tourist Zone
On 24 June, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un attended a ceremony to mark the completion of the Wonsan-Kalma tourist zone. The event was also attended by Russian Ambassador to Pyongyang Alexander Matsegora. On July 1, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the resort had begun receiving domestic tourists.
According to media reports, hotels in the Wonsan tourist zone can accommodate 20,000 guests, there is an outdoor water park and the beach is four kilometres long. The country's authorities expect the tourist zone to receive foreign tourists as well. Governor of Russia's Far Eastern Primorye Region Oleg Kozhemyako reached an agreement on group travel during a visit to the country for talks with the North Korean prime minister.
