China has called on the United States to lift unilateral tariff measures against its trading partners. This was in response to a US Supreme Court ruling that some tariffs imposed under emergency powers are illegal.
A spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in response to media inquiries that Beijing will closely monitor Washington's next steps in the area of tariff policy while strictly protecting its legitimate rights and interests. He also called on the United States to lift other unilateral tariffs imposed on trading partners.
On 20 February, the US Supreme Court ruled by a 6-3 vote that President Donald Trump's sweeping global tariffs, imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), are contrary to law. According to the majority of justices, this law does not allow the president to impose across-the-board import taxes.
China's Ministry of Commerce said it is currently conducting a comprehensive analysis of the decision and its potential impact. It reiterated its long-standing opposition to all forms of unilateral tariff increases and recalled that trade wars have no winners and protectionism is not the solution.
According to the State Department, the U.S. measures - including the so-called reciprocal and fentanyl tariffs - violate not only international trade rules but also the U.S. domestic legal framework and do not serve the interests of either party. „The facts repeatedly show that both China and the United States benefit from cooperation, while confrontation brings losses,“ the spokesman said.
The department also warned that the US is reportedly preparing alternative steps, such as new trade investigations, to maintain tariffs against trading partners. China will therefore closely monitor further developments and take firm measures to protect its interests if necessary, according to the ministry.
