Overview of the latest economic events in the Czech Republic
The end of 2025 brought a significantly positive mood to the Czech capital market. Index PX on the Prague Stock Exchange on Tuesday, 30 December, it strengthened by 0.78 % at 2685.65 points and once again surpassed its historical maximum. The growth of the index was driven primarily by banking stocks, especially Erste Bank a Moneta Money Bank, whose shares were among the most traded. The last trading day of the year thus confirmed the strong performance of the domestic stock market, which benefited from a stable banking sector and expectations of further gradual easing of monetary conditions in 2026.
The situation on the real estate and credit markets remained relatively calm. At the end of December, the average mortgage rate remained slightly above 4.5% p.a., indicating stabilisation after a previous period of sharp fluctuations. Households and investors are therefore entering the new year with cautious optimism.
Foreign investment
The global investment environment at the turn of the year was marked by a number of significant commercial transactions and acquisitions. The American technology group Meta Platforms announced the acquisition of a fast-growing AI start-up Manus for an amount exceeding 2 miliardy USD. This acquisition is intended to strengthen the development of autonomous artificial intelligence that can be used across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms.
One of the biggest deals in recent years is taking place in the media sector. Netflix seeks to acquire key assets of the company Warner Bros. Discovery, while the consortium around Paramount Skydance submitted a competing bid for the entire media house. These transactions, worth tens of billions of dollars, could fundamentally reshape the global streaming services market.
The pharmaceutical industry saw further consolidation when the French company Sanofi concluded an agreement to purchase an American biotechnology company Dynavax Technologies za zhruba 2,2 miliardy USD. The aim is to strengthen the vaccine portfolio and long-term competitiveness on global markets. The following also played a significant role SoftBank Group, which continued its expansion into robotics and digital infrastructure through acquisitions including ABB Robotics a DigitalBridge Group.
Significant events outside the Czech Republic with global impact
The energy sector was significantly affected by geopolitics in 2025. Russian gas exports to Europe via pipelines fell by 44 % to 18 billion cubic metres, which is the lowest volume since the mid-1970s. The main reasons were the termination of transit through Ukraine and the European Union's ongoing efforts to restrict Russian energy imports as part of its sanctions policy.
At the same time, Russia has increased gas supplies to Asia, where the company Gazprom increased exports to China via the Power of Siberia gas pipeline. On commodity markets, Brent crude oil ended 2025 with a significant annual loss, reflecting a combination of weaker demand and high production.
