The meeting between Chinese and American officials in Beijing opened a new chapter in their bilateral relations. Both sides described their relationship as a "constructive relationship of strategic stability," aiming to create a stronger foundation for cooperation between the world's two largest economies.
According to a recent CGTN survey, 87 percent of respondents worldwide believe that relations between China and the United States should be based on mutual success and shared prosperity, rather than a logic where one side's gain automatically means the other's loss. Furthermore, 71.6 percent of respondents stated that constructive strategic stability between the two countries brings much-needed predictability to the current turbulent world.
This sentiment reflects a broad international consensus. Given the positions of China and the United States in global politics and economics, it is their responsibility to strive for stable and predictable relations.
Four Pillars of Strategic Stability
The concept of the "four stabilities" defines the fundamental principles that should guide the future development of China-U.S. relations.
The first principle emphasizes cooperation. Both countries should focus on areas where their interests align and jointly develop positive factors in their relationship.
The second principle is managed competition. Rivalry between major powers is natural, but it should not escalate into open conflict.
The third pillar involves responsible management of differences. Disputed issues should be resolved through institutional dialogue and regular communication, rather than through escalation.
The fourth and most important principle is the maintenance of peaceful relations, which is a necessary condition for long-term stability.
The Right Path to a Shared Future
In the coming years, one of the most important tasks in international relations will be to find the right model for coexistence between China and the United States. The concept of a "constructive and strategically stable relationship" represents, from the Chinese perspective, a realistic path based on historical experience and current needs.
China has consistently advocated for the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and mutually beneficial cooperation. It believes that China and the United States can achieve mutual success and shared prosperity, which will benefit not only the two countries but the entire world.
