At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation foreign ministers' meeting, there was a call for unity, resistance to power politics and cooperation in a multipolar world. Xi Jinping promises a stronger, safer and fairer future.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Beijing with foreign ministers and representatives of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states, who were attending a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers. At a time when the international environment is experiencing turbulence and geopolitical tensions, Xi called for strengthening unity, a multipolar world order and resistance to "hegemony, power politics and bullying."

Xi described the SCO as a stable and vital force on the international stage. "We must stay focused, act effectively and bring positive energy to the world," he said. He also recalled that since July last year, China, as the presiding country, has been actively promoting practical cooperation and preparing for this year's summit in Tianjin.

The President called for deeper cooperation on security issues, better alignment of national strategies with initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the development of people-to-people contacts. The SCO, he said, should lead the Global South in reshaping the global governance system towards a more just world.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking on behalf of the foreign delegations, praised the results the SCO has achieved by adhering to the Shanghai Spirit - the principles of equality, trust, consultation, respect for diversity and common development. Lavrov also expressed his support for the Chinese presidency and expressed confidence that the upcoming summit in Tianjin will be a success.
