The Royal Crown, apple, and scepter will be on display in the Vladislav Hall of Prague Castle from Tuesday, September 17th, to Monday, September 30th, as part of the celebrations for the St. Wenceslas anniversary. This year's exhibition, subtitled "The Mysterious Power of Stones," will focus specifically on the gemstones that adorn the regalia.
The coronation regalia, along with a special display case featuring the gemstones, will be exhibited in the Vladislav Hall of the Old Royal Palace. The first visitors will be able to view them on Tuesday, September 17th. The day before, in the presence of seven keyholders, the regalia will be ceremoniously removed from the Coronation Chamber in St. Vitus, Wenceslas, and Vojtech Cathedrals, transported to the Vladislav Hall, and inspected by restorers.
The exhibition of the coronation regalia will run from September 17th to 30th, and visitors can access it daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The exception is both Thursdays, which are reserved for school groups. On Thursday, September 19th, the exhibition will be closed to the public, while on Thursday, September 26th, it will open at 1:00 PM.
This year, the entrance will be from the Hradčany Square gate to the Southern Gardens, then up the Bull Staircase to the IIIrd courtyard and into the Old Royal Palace. Along the way, there are restrooms and a place to purchase refreshments. A cloakroom is available before entering the hall. Admission to the exhibition is free. Due to operational reasons, strollers are not permitted in the exhibition; they cannot be brought into the Vladislav Hall, and the waiting area is not accessible. Once the daily capacity of the exhibition is reached, the organizers will close the gate to the Southern Gardens and the queue itself, so that people do not have to wait unnecessarily on that day.
Visitors in wheelchairs, accompanied by one person, can access the exhibition directly from the IIIrd courtyard. School groups can also visit, but their visits are subject to prior reservation through the Prague Castle website.
Due to preparations for the exhibition, the Old Royal Palace will be closed from Tuesday, September 10th, to Monday, September 16th. A second closure is planned after the exhibition ends, on Tuesday, October 1st. The cathedral will be closed to tourists on the day the regalia are removed, which is Monday, September 16th.
A new feature of this year's exhibition will be a holographic animation.
Thirteen green emeralds and sixty pearls, which were prominent on the St. Wenceslas Crown in 1347 during the coronation, were removed by Charles IV at the end of his life, and the crown was fitted with blue sapphires. Thanks to a new feature of this year's exhibition, a holographic animation, visitors will be able to see the crown as it originally looked, during the coronation. In addition, on the way to the display case with the coronation regalia, visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about the individual gemstones, including how they appear in nature.
