FEBRUARY, from an astrological perspective, is still winter, but according to the biological calendar, spring begins on February 13th. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the kidneys are the most vulnerable and susceptible organs. The Water element is still dominant.

THE KIDNEYS are considered one of the most important organs in the body. They are described as the "root of the yin-yang of all internal organs" and the "source of life." The kidneys store the innate life force and essence from which a person is born, lives, and produces offspring. They are the fundamental organ that determines the length of life. Energy decreases from birth, and when it is depleted, the organism dies. This energy cannot be increased, only its rate of decline can be slowed, and this energy must be preserved in the best possible quality.

The kidneys also govern water, and are responsible for regulating the process of transforming and moving fluids throughout the body, from intake to elimination. The kidneys are associated with the bladder, bones and marrow, brain, hair, ears, rectum, and urethra.

According to the organ clock, the kidneys are most active between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM, so it is beneficial to support their activity during this time.

How does kidney weakness manifest?

Kidney imbalances often manifest as decreased or suppressed urination, or conversely, frequent urination and incontinence, which occurs when a deficiency of kidney qi weakens the bladder's control functions. These imbalances can also affect sexual function. Common symptoms include pressure and pain in the lower back and lumbar region, weakness in the lower limbs, cold feet, loss of vitality, hearing loss, tinnitus, infertility, swollen eyelids, or poor hair quality.

Insomnia and general nervousness are related to a deficiency of yin, while forgetfulness is associated with depletion of kidney essence. Kidney weakness can also manifest as knee pain and swelling in the legs. Watery swelling is caused by a deficiency of yang in the kidneys, causing water to stagnate and accumulate in the superficial parts of the body.

How can we achieve balance?

It is important to be in harmony with nature, which is still in a state of rest. Therefore, lack of sleep, excessive consumption of coffee and alcohol, lack of exercise, rushing while eating, and stressful situations deplete the vital energy of the kidneys. We should therefore strive for peace in our lives, rest, and as much warmth as possible, especially protecting our hands and feet.

On a spiritual level, our health is reflected in our relationships, as well as our relationship with ourselves, animals, and plants. It is necessary to learn to love all beings around us. Coldness (disinterest, a cold and unapproachable attitude in relationships) is harmful to the kidneys, while pleasant warmth (love from the heart) encourages their function. The kidneys also react negatively to spicy foods and harsh behavior, but they are pleased by a calm and gentle diet, family harmony, and affection.

What foods can help strengthen the kidneys?

The kidneys are very susceptible to cold, so we must protect them with nourishing, warming foods that are rich in protein. All cold foods and white sugar have a detrimental effect on the kidneys. The most suitable foods include legumes, soups (preferably broth), meat dishes, preserves, and cooked grains. It is also important to avoid excessive salt, sugar, foods that are strongly cooling, and drinking coffee and alcohol.

Here are some suitable grains for strengthening the kidneys: buckwheat, oats, and amaranth. From legumes, choose adzuki beans, red and white beans, lentils, and soybeans. We recommend lightly steamed or fermented vegetables. Warming spices include onion, garlic, ginger, fennel, celery, Brussels sprouts, leeks, and beetroot. Add ingredients like miso paste, high-quality soy sauce, and ume vinegar to cooked dishes. Suitable winter spices include cloves, anise, cinnamon, and vanilla. Herbs that support kidney function include white birch, stinging nettle, horsetail, goldenrod, heather, and sweet violet. This article was published with the kind permission of the Sféra magazine.
