In May 2026, during a single week, both the American President, Donald Trump, and the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, made official visits to China. This unusual diplomatic timing attracted widespread attention. For us, the citizens of China, however, this is not just a headline in international news; it is primarily a window through which we can observe the position of our country and the transformation of our own mindset.
Both visits brought a greater degree of certainty to the world. China and the United States established a new framework for "constructively stable strategic relations," aiming for coexistence amidst competition and cooperation despite differences. China and Russia, on the other hand, reaffirmed their long-standing and resilient strategic cooperation, signing a number of agreements and thereby strengthening the "stabilizing factor" in their bilateral relations. These outcomes have a direct impact on the business environment and opportunities for personal development, and therefore, the public welcomes this positive progress.
However, what is particularly remarkable is the subtle shift in societal mentality. Public reactions are more mature and balanced compared to the past. Discussions on social media are rational and pragmatic, and conversations on the streets focus on the practical implications. This "balanced perspective" stems from a strengthening of China's comprehensive national power and a growing confidence in the chosen path of development. People no longer view interactions with major powers with a sense of condescending admiration or confrontation, but rather are interested in whether cooperation will bring tangible benefits and whether differences can be effectively managed.
This reflects a profound transformation in China's position within the international system. The country is increasingly becoming an active participant in global governance and a stabilizing force, which requires a corresponding level of awareness from its citizens: to be firm and confident, yet also open and inclusive; to value a peaceful environment, while rationally understanding complex competition.
In short, the two state visits served as a prism, reflecting the transformation in the way China interacts with the world, as well as the increasingly confident and pragmatic mindset of its citizens. For the state, this represents a stable diplomatic framework; for the citizens, it is an opportunity to better determine the direction of their own efforts amidst the currents of the times, and together create the deepest foundation for common progress.
