PRAGUE – In a political landscape typically rife with disagreements, representatives from the ruling coalition and the opposition have surprisingly found common ground. The Minister of Finance, Zbyněk Stanjura (ODS), and the deputy leaders of the opposition parties ANO and SPD, Karel Havlíček and Radim Fiala, agreed during a Sunday broadcast of the Czech Television program "Questions of Václav Moravec" to support tax exemptions for income derived from the sale of company shares exceeding 40 million Czech crowns – provided that this benefit did not apply to cryptocurrencies.

This discussion follows a vote in the Chamber of Deputies on Friday, where lawmakers rejected a proposal that would have provided tax advantages not only for the sale of companies but also for profits from cryptocurrencies. The proposal, which was part of a broader amendment to the law on income tax, sparked a heated debate. Critics pointed to the risk of tax evasion and speculation in the cryptocurrency sector, while proponents argued in favor of supporting the investment environment.

Minister Stanjura stated during the television debate that he would support the reintroduction of a proposal that would focus exclusively on the sale of company shares, explicitly excluding cryptocurrencies from this exemption. "I support the idea that an entrepreneur who sells their company after years of building it and reinvests the profits should not be burdened with an excessive tax burden," Stanjura said. Karel Havlíček of the ANO movement expressed a similar sentiment: "If the proposal is separated from the cryptocurrency issue, we are prepared to support it."

This agreement between the government and the opposition opens up the possibility that a new proposal with a narrower focus could succeed in the Chamber of Deputies. Whether the proposal will be revised and when it might be debated again is not yet clear. However, it is evident that the issue of taxing capital gains remains a sensitive political topic that resonates not only among lawmakers but also among entrepreneurs and investors.
