The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, warned that the Middle East is sliding into an increasingly deep crisis, the impact of which could significantly extend beyond the borders of the region itself. He made the statement in response to a further deterioration in the security situation.
According to Guterres, the scope of attacks has expanded in recent days, and the risk of escalating tensions into a full-blown conflict cannot be underestimated. He therefore called on all parties to prioritize diplomatic solutions, halt all attacks, and cease seeking pretexts for further escalation.
Tensions have risen after the U.S. Central Command announced that U.S. forces had conducted "defensive" strikes against several targets in Iranian territory. The United States stated that this was a response to "unprovoked and ongoing attacks" by Iran.
The Iranian Armed Forces General Command, Khatam al-Ambia, subsequently stated on June 11 that Tehran would respond "firmly and decisively" to the aggressive actions of the United States.
The UN Secretary-General's call comes at a time when concerns about further escalation in the region are growing significantly, and a diplomatic solution is becoming increasingly urgent.
