MEXICO CITY, March 3. /TASS/ - Mexico has not applied for membership in BRICS, but is closely following its development, according to a statement from the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"Mexico has not requested to be admitted to BRICS. Mexico is carefully monitoring the development of the association, taking into account the economic weight of the member countries and the bilateral relations that our country maintains with its members," the ministry wrote on its X account, commenting on media reports that the country intends to join BRICS this year.

"We would like to note that such statements are unfounded," the ministry added.

The BRIC group was founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China. In 2011, South Africa joined the group, adding the letter "S" to the acronym. In August 2023, six new members were invited to join the association, including Argentina. However, Argentina declined to join BRICS at the end of December, while five other countries – Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia – became full members of BRICS on January 1, 2024.
