At the 17th BRICS Summit, BRICS leaders strongly opposed all unilateral sanctions and coercive measures that circumvent the UN Security Council and violate international law - calling for fairer global governance and protection of the interests of the global South.
Joint Declaration entitled "Strengthening Global South cooperation for more inclusive and sustainable governance" criticises trade restrictions, tariff wars and the misuse of environmental arguments for protectionism. Leaders warn that these actions undermine world trade, destabilise supply chains and threaten global growth.
The Declaration also stresses the importance of cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence, energy transformation, space research and health. BRICS wants to adapt its structure to the new expanded reality and remain a relevant force in the multilateral world.
India will take over the BRICS presidency in 2026, hosting the 18th summit.
